Today, Europe is witnessing major changes in the area of road traffic. Starting this month, new EU rules come into force and concern issues related to the suspension of driving licenses. Now, the suspension of licenses for serious violations, such as drunk driving or speeding, will apply throughout the European Union. Interestingly, this decision was supported by most of the transport ministers of the member states, which underlines the united position of the community in the fight against dangerous drivers.
Under the new rules, if a driver is caught breaking the law in one country, it may have consequences in another EU country. For example, an Austrian caught in Italy with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit will lose his license not only in Italy but also in Austria. The initiative is designed to improve road safety, and its launch coincides with serious statistics: in 2021, more than 20,000 fatalities were registered in the EU as a result of road accidents.
The new rules will therefore allow for more effective control of street safety and will also ensure a pan-European exchange of information on violations. It is important to note that licenses will be revoked not only for extreme speeding, but also for minor violations: more than 30 km/h in the city and more than 50 km/h outside it. This may instill fear in drivers, but perhaps this is exactly what politicians are trying to achieve in their efforts to reduce the number of accidents on the roads.
These innovations could eventually form the basis for a reform of the general rules for obtaining a driving license. Coordination with the European Parliament is already underway, and if the law is passed, it will be a historic step in traffic management on the continent. Ensuring road safety is now a task that every driver faces, and the new control system will provide an answer to the question of how to travel more safely across Europe.
