Austrian labour market: rising unemployment and shortage of workers

Austria has been experiencing major changes in the labour market in recent months, and new statistics confirm this. In November this year, the country registered an additional 31,400 unemployed people, an increase of 8.9%. This means that a total of around 384,000 people are looking for work or are in training at various employment services. This fact attracts attention, as it signals the current economic difficulties.

Economy Minister Martin Kocher points to a key reason for the changes taking place. In his view, the weakness of the global economy is having a negative impact on the Austrian labour market. As an export-oriented country, Austria is feeling the impact of falling global demand, especially from its neighbour Germany. What changes this will bring to the lives of ordinary Austrians and how it will affect businesses remains an open question.

But there is also hope: many sectors such as construction, the chemical and electrical industries, as well as retail, are currently actively looking for employees despite the general unemployment background. However, according to the data, there are still around 152,267 unfilled vacancies in the country, indicating a real labour shortage. Kurt Egger, Secretary General of the Economic Association, warns that labour and energy costs must be reduced to improve the situation.

The situation in some sectors is particularly alarming, for example in the retail trade there are 25,878 vacancies and in electrical engineering and IT 23,081. This leads to the need to introduce incentive measures such as employee benefits and expanded childcare programs. Such measures can significantly improve the situation on the labor market and make it more attractive to job seekers, giving hope for a recovery in economic growth in Austria.
