Meldezettel: Residence Registration in Austria — Step-by-Step Guide

Moved to a new apartment in Austria? Congratulations! But don't forget the most important bureaucratic procedure — Meldezettel. This little card can cost you up to €218 in fines if you forget it. Here's how to register your residence in Austria in 15 minutes and avoid legal problems. And if you plan to rent out your property, registration is especially important.

What is Meldezettel and Why is it Mandatory

This requirement applies to:

  • Austrian citizens
  • EU/EEA citizens
  • Third-country citizens with residence permit

Important: Lack of registration can lead not only to fines but also to problems with other government services — from parking to social benefits.

Registration Deadlines — How Much Time Do You Have?

The law clearly regulates the deadlines:

  • 3 дня — для граждан ЕС/ЕЭЗ с момента заезда в новую квартиру
  • 3 дня — для граждан третьих стран с момента получения разрешения на проживание

Important: The deadline is counted in calendar days, including weekends and holidays. If you moved in on Friday evening, registration must be completed by the end of Monday.

Registration takes place at the district office (Meldebehörde or Meldestelle) at your place of residence. Depending on the federal state, this can be:

Step-by-Step Registration Guide

Step 2: Fill in Your Data (Part A)

In part A of the form indicate:

  • Last name, first name
  • Date of birth
  • Citizenship
  • Previous registration address (if any)
  • New residence address
  • Date of moving into the new apartment

Step 3: Ask the Landlord to Fill Part B

If you rent through an agency, an authorized person can sign this part.

Step 4: Submit Documents to Meldestelle

Come to the district office with:

  • Completed Meldezettel (part A + part B)

Immediately after submitting documents you will receive registration confirmation (Meldebestätigung). This is free and usually takes 5-10 minutes.

How Much Does Registration Cost?

The only expenses:

  • Meldezettel form: about €0.20 (if bought at a tobacco shop)
  • Free: when downloaded from the website or obtained at the municipal office

Fines for Late Registration

For violating the registration deadline, an administrative fine is provided:

  • До €218 — базовый штраф за несвоевременную регистрацию
  • До €726 — при повторном нарушении или уклонении

Better not to delay! Registration takes only 15-20 minutes.

Online Registration in Austria

In some federal states, online registration is available through:

  • FinanzOnline — для лиц, имеющих доступ к системе
  • HELP.gv.at — государственный портал услуг

In Vienna, full online registration is being gradually implemented, but personal visit to MA 62 is currently recommended.

What to Do When Moving to Another Apartment?

When changing address:

  1. Fill out a new Meldezettel for the new address
  2. Submit it within 3 days after moving
  3. Old registration is automatically canceled

You don't need to separately cancel the old registration — the system will do it automatically.
