Europe’s largest free open-air festival turned the Danube Island into a giant stage again — and our photo report starts with the highlight of Friday night. Donauinselfest 2026 brought around 200 acts to 14 stages, and My Ugly Clementine kicked off the evening on the Wien Energie / radio FM4 stage with an indie-rock set many called the discovery of the festival. Donauinselfest 2026 — Europe’s biggest free open-air on the Danube

The 43rd Donauinselfest took place from 3 to 5 July 2026 between Floridsdorfer Brücke and Reichsbrücke and around Copa Beach on Vienna’s Donauinsel. As ots.at reports, the city presented the line-up under the motto “Sommer an!” with about 700 hours of music across genres from rock and pop to hip-hop, Wiener Lied, Schlager and electronic.

Admission is free for all stages, which makes Donauinselfest a unique case in Europe. According to Kurier, music ran until midnight, with the legendary Ö3 Silent Disco running until 01:00. This year the festival put extra emphasis on inclusion and youth: Friday was made the official school report day (Zeugnistag) with free ice cream for pupils at 11:30 and an inclusion concert afterwards.

My Ugly Clementine on the FM4 stage — who they are and why everyone waited for them

My Ugly Clementine is a Viennese indie-rock band founded in 2019 by Sophie Lindinger with Mira Lu Kovacs and Nastasja Ronck. Often described as a Viennese supergroup, they have already won three Amadeus Austrian Music Awards in the Alternative category in 2020, 2021 and 2024. As ORF FM4 notes, their new single “Confidence” and upcoming fourth album “Apply Autonomy” (out 4 September 2026) set the tone for the summer — loud, personal and refreshingly uncomfortable.

At Donauinselfest 2026 they played the Wien Energie / radio FM4 Festbühne on Friday 3 July at 18:15, right after Rock The Island winner LELLA (17:00) and before Giant Rooks (19:55) and headliner Zartmann (21:45). According to meinbezirk.at, the FM4 stage traditionally draws the youngest and loudest crowd. The trio’s themes — feminism, empowerment and setting boundaries — resonated far beyond the front rows.

Missed the show? Good news: the band heads out on a larger tour from late September, and the festival set was a live preview of the new album that the musicians promise will be “loud fun”.

The FM4 stage on Friday evening looked like a textbook festival production: broad stage, warm light, inclusion banners and thousands gathered in front. When My Ugly Clementine opened with “Confidence”, the crowd immediately picked up the energy — guitar riffs, three-part vocals and a tight rhythm section. Our photos capture that exact summer concentration when daytime heat fades and only music remains.

At the same time dozens of zones were active across the island, but the FM4 stage had the highest density. People came early to secure spots, many with children — Friday was a family day. The atmosphere was relaxed and very Viennese: no pushing, respect for neighbours and volunteers helping with orientation.

This gallery fixes not only the stage but the reaction — raised hands, smiles, barefoot dancing on the grass. That is Donauinselfest 2026 in its purest form: free access to high-quality live music, where indie rock sounds next to pop hits and Wiener Lied.

Island atmosphere — thousands of people, summer and music without tickets

The second part of the experience is the island itself. Between stages you found food trucks, initiative booths, sports areas and quiet spots by the water. With the Donauinsel up to 250 metres wide and 21 km long, even with hundreds of thousands of visitors there is a feeling of space. The weather cooperated at the start of July: around 26–28°C during the day, a light Danube breeze and a sunset that bathed the photos in warm light.

As 5min.at highlights, the line-up ranged from NEK and Nico Santos to Avatar, Andy Borg, Jazz Gitti and Gert Steinbäcker & Band. Yet the magic of Donauinselfest is not only the headliners but the proximity of stages: within five minutes you can move from Swedish metal act Avatar on the rock stage to Pretty Pink’s electronic beats nearby.

Organisation deserves praise: free drinking water, clear signage, the #dif26 dabei! app with set times and maps, plus big-screen broadcasts of World Cup matches — at 20:00 on Friday and 19:00 on Saturday the round of 16 and 8 games were shown live.

Donauinselfest is an expression of peaceful coexistence and a moment of enchantment when culture in public space is accessible to everyone without a ticket.

Practical part in brief. The best way is public transport: U1, U6, trams and buses to Donauinsel, Floridsdorf and Copa Beach exits. Friday 3 July timeline: 11:30 free ice cream for pupils, 12:00–13:00 inclusion concert Thorsteinn Einarsson, 13:15 ceremony honouring Special Olympics athletes, then in the evening LELLA → My Ugly Clementine → Giant Rooks → Zartmann.
