News

Current scholarship programs: 7 open calls in October 2026 Current scholarship programs as of October 2026: OeAD grants, EPFL and OIST internships, Fund for Peace stipend, Cologne PhD — exact deadlines and conditions. Topics: News, Career & Education.

October is the month when most scholarship programs for study and internships abroad open their application windows. We collected 7 current calls with deadlines from November 1, 2026 to April 2027: grants from Austria’s OeAD agency, paid internships in the US and Switzerland, a research internship in Japan, and a funded PhD position in Germany. For every program we verified the exact amounts and dates on official websites — some figures circulating in online round-ups are outdated. A deadline calendar is at the end.

OeAD scholarships for study and research in Austria

OeAD (Österreichischer Austauschdienst) is Austria’s agency for education and international exchange, the main operator of government scholarships for people coming to Austria. In late September 2026 the agency published an overview of scholarships and grants for the 2027/28 academic year — applications for several programs are already open.

Three nearest deadlines:

  • Ernst Mach-Stipendium weltweit — for young researchers and academics of all disciplines outside Austria who want to run a research project at an Austrian university. Deadline: December 1, 2026, 23:59 (apply via grants.at).
  • CEEPUS — exchanges with students and staff from Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Funding covers placements from three days to 10 months; applications for the 2027 summer semester close on November 1, 2026 (CEEPUS conditions on OeAD).
  • Ernst Mach-Stipendium for Fachhochschule — for bachelor’s and master’s students at universities outside Europe who want to study at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences. Deadline: February 1, 2027.

OeAD scholarship programs cover research visits, full semesters and internships — applications for 2027/28 are open right now.

Helmut Veith Stipend at TU Wien: 2026 call cancelled

The Helmut Veith Stipend is TU Wien’s scholarship for women admitted to an English-taught Master’s program in computer science. Standard terms: EUR 7,000 per year plus a tuition waiver, with an annual deadline of November 30.

This year, however, there is no call: TU Wien officially announced that the 2026 round is cancelled due to budgetary constraints (verified October 16, 2026). The program may return in 2027 — watch the scholarship page and the TU Wien job portal. In the meantime, browse other OeAD scholarships and our guide to Austrian universities.

OIST research internship in Japan

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) welcomes students worldwide for its Research Internship — a 4-to-6-month placement in OIST laboratories. Benefits: a stipend of 2,400 JPY per working day, a round-trip air ticket, and funded accommodation.

The Spring 2027 round closed on October 15, 2026 — yesterday. The next round (Fall 2027) opens in spring, with a deadline of April 15, 2027 (OIST selection schedule). Eligible: students in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree, master’s students, and graduates; current PhD students cannot apply. The application fee is 5,000 JPY; all documents are in English.

EPFL summer research internship in Lausanne

Swiss EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) runs an annual Summer Research Program for bachelor’s and master’s students — 8 weeks in a School of Life Sciences lab. The 2027 season runs July 5 to August 27.

Participants receive CHF 3,600 for the full period (housing is paid out of this amount in advance; about CHF 1,700 remains for living costs) plus travel reimbursement of up to CHF 1,000 for overseas flights. Application deadline: November 15, 2026, 23:59 CET (program terms at EPFL). 20–25 participants are selected; you need a transcript, short essays, and references — everything must be uploaded in one session, there is no save-and-return.

US think-tank The Fund for Peace recruits interns in conflict analysis, human rights, and international relations. Internships are remote or hybrid and last 3–4 months or longer.

The spring round (January–May) opened applications on October 15; the deadline is November 15, 2026. The stipend is USD 700 per month full-time, USD 350 part-time (terms on the Fund for Peace website). Applications are accepted only via the Idealist portal; international candidates are welcome, but a US work visa is needed for in-person work — the organization helps with paperwork but does not cover visa fees.

Two tips. First, collect recommendation letters early — in many programs referees only receive their link after you submit. Second, re-check dates on the official pages on submission day: round schedules do shift. To catch new scholarship round-ups and Austrian education news, subscribe to our newsletter.
