A fire that left its mark

The fire at Buchberghütte broke out in the morning when nobody was inside. The hut was preparing for its winter closure when the smoke alarm went off. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was fully engulfed. Its remote location at high altitude made firefighting extremely difficult. Crews from seven federal states were deployed.

According to Krone.at, two police helicopters were used to draw water from Lake Mondsee. Despite all efforts, Buchberghütte burned to the ground.

The custodian’s loss

Operator Helmut Schranz was deeply shaken by the loss, describing the hut as “the life’s work of three generations.” He hopes for reconstruction but says the future remains uncertain.

Challenges in fighting the fire

Beyond the altitude, snow and slippery roads hampered access to the site. Roughly 112 rescue workers battled the blaze under difficult conditions until late evening.
