When should you apply for extension?

The 4-week minimum

Under § 24(1) of the Niederlassungs- und Aufenthaltsgesetz (NAG), you must file an extension application at least 4 weeks before your current permit expires. In practice, most Bezirkshauptmannschaft recommend 6–8 weeks because processing takes longer during peak periods.

The expiry date is on your residence permit card — don’t guess, check the card. Plan backwards:

• 24 months: standard for RWR-Karte and RWR-Karte plus
• 12 months: for probationary residence or limited permits
• 5 years: for Niederlassungsbewilligung or Daueraufenthalt – EU

What happens if you miss the deadline?
