By 2030, Austria plans to fully convert the postal fleet to electric vehicles, supporting one of the government’s key strategies — green policy. But what does reality look like?

The problem lies in the insufficient range of some electric vehicles for postal routes, which vary from 20 to 120 kilometers. Postal workers often have to turn off the heaters in their vehicles to make it to the end of their shift. Union activist Franz Doppelhofer highlights the difficulties associated with the range of older models. In rural areas where frequent stops are the norm, the situation is exacerbated. This raises the question: how can worker comfort and safety be ensured when they must worry about saving electricity?
