A concerning topic regarding education and integration has emerged in Austria. A survey conducted by the Vienna teachers’ union revealed that one in two teachers reports that about 50% of their students do not have sufficient command of the German language. This is a serious issue — nearly 21% of primary school students are classified as “special,” meaning they cannot fully participate in the learning process.

At first glance, this may seem like mere statistics, but the numbers become more striking when you learn that 52% of these 15,613 exceptional students were born in Austria, and 20% hold Austrian citizenship. This shows that the language barrier problem affects not only immigrants but also children who grew up in the country.

Union representative Thomas Krebs noted that only 10% of surveyed teachers said all their students understand German. This is alarming, because without a common language, successful learning becomes impossible. Some language deficiencies can be addressed in support classes, but resources are currently far from sufficient. Teachers link the problem to early childhood preparation in kindergartens, where educators try to instill German communication skills. However, there are difficulties there too: staff shortages, large groups, and parents refusing to participate in the process.

Krebs and his team are calling for action: increased funding for primary education and more active involvement of parents in the educational process. These measures could fundamentally change the situation and help children gain sufficient German language knowledge before starting school.
